The dog bears the pride of the people in Phu Quoc island
The Phu Quoc Ridgeback is a breed of dog from the island of Phú Quốc in Kiên Giang Province in southern Vietnam. It is one of three ridgebacked breeds, the others being the Rhodesian Ridgeback and the Thai Ridgeback.
It's one of the rarest dogs in the world. The number of Phu Quoc Ridgeback is very small. In 2015, only about 800 species were registered around the world, of which the most live in Phu Quoc island, Kien Giang, Vietnam.
The origin of Phu Quoc Ridgeback is still unknown. As two American scientists, Merle Wood and Merle Hidinger said that the ridge of hair on the back of Phu Quoc dog certainly originated from Thai dog breeds. According to them, at least 400 years ago, Thai fishermen unknowingly became breeders when they came fishing in Phu Quoc island.
However, Master Nguyen Van Bien of Can Tho University in Vietnam has refuted the above theory. He said the theory was absurd, Phu Quoc is a isolated island far from mainland, Thai fisherman could not exceed 400-500 kilometers to reach Phu Quoc island.
